See the pictures!!!
You are invited, on Sunday, 6 July 2008 to an
Imagination Club Brussels Sunday Afternoon
Culture Group Activity:
A guided walk of the historic churchyard area
of the cemetery of Laeken and its two churches
The cultural organization Laeken découverte is offering a tour,
in English, of the famous cemetery of Laeken with its wealth of sculptural
creations and the two churches. Indeed this graveyard is often compared
with the Père Lachaise in Paris.
Apart from being the last burial ground in Brussels to be situated around
a church, and being tied physically and historically to the Belgian royal
family, the cemetery of Laeken has the following features to offer :
the underground passageways, the church built in 1275 and an abundance
of sculptural art : an authentic ‘Thinker’ by Rodin and numerous
creations of the Salu ‘dynasty’ of sculptors (Ernest I, II
and III whose old workshop is still to be seen near the main entrance);
the tombs of great figures from the worlds of art, architecture, politics
and industry, plus, since 1850, the tombs of the kings and other members
of the royal family.
