Male and Female Gender Stereotypes

Gender roles are cultural and personal. They determine how males and females should think, speak, dress, and interact within the context of society. Learning plays a role in this process of shaping gender roles. These gender schemas are deeply embedded cognitive frameworks regarding what defines masculine and feminine.

For example; Women are caring and nurturing. Men are aggressive.  Men don't ask for directions. Women can't read maps. The list of stereotypes goes on but a new study in America suggests that these differences are illusions created by the media.

Author Janet S. Hyde, from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, says traditional portrayals of men and women as psychologically different are vastly overestimated and the two sexes are more similar in personality, communication, 
cognitive ability and leadership than realized. Is this true?

Many people recognise the danger of stereotyping, yet continue to make these kinds of generalisations.

Through open discussion and group exercises, you will explore gender stereotyping, what it is, what it all means and how we all perpetuate it on a daily basis.  

By the end of this workshop, you can expect to have a better understanding of how pervasive stereotyping is and what you can do about it
